Upper Eyelid

Excessive upper eyelid skin results from the loss of skin elasticity and the integrity of underlying eyelid structures.

SYMPTOMS

Patients may complain of a heaviness of the upper eyelid, need to constantly raise their brow during the day, or the struggle to place or retain makeup on the upper lid if there is redundant upper eyelid skin. In addition, a low brow may exacerbate the excessive lid tissue leading to an even more complex problem.

TREATMENTS

Depending on the amount and texture of the skin, the eyelid skin can be resurfaced using a variety of lasers. If there is a large degree of skin laxity, an upper eyelid blepharoplasty (eye lift) or an eyebrow lift (forehead lift) may be the treatment of choice. Eyelid lifts (Blepharoplasty) are performed in the operating room at The Zatezalo Group.  Dr Z will excise excess skin using a hidden lid crease incision and if needed he will sculpt, excise or repositioned the fat of the upper lid to rejuvenate the eyelid. The hidden eyelid crease incision prevents visible scarring and treatment of the fat allows for a youthful, yet full upper eyelid to be attained.  If you have a hollow upper eyelid, or a deep sulcus, Dr Zatezalo may recommend volumization of the upper eyelid using several cutting edge techniques.  In addition, he may recommend treatment of the skin in order to reduce small wrinkles or creepiness of the skin.  If the brow determined to be low, a blepharoplasty alone will not fix excessive eyelid skin, in fact, a blepharoplasty alone may lead to a worsening of this condition.

Performing an upper eyelid blepharoplasty is not the most difficult surgery, but if the upper face is evaluated incorrectly, or the incision is made incorrectly, poor outcomes and possible complication occur.  There are several cosmetic units to the upper face and if all these components are not addressed and evaluated correctly, results will suffer.

An eyelid lift can lead to a more rejuvenated and refreshed appearance. There are small anatomical differences in each eyelid which means that each eyelid lift needs to be customized and each cosmetic unit of the upper face needs to addressed appropriately.

Surgical repair of a drooping lid requires a skillful surgeon with extensive training in ophthalmic plastic surgery.  Oculoplastic surgeons have special training and expertise in treating cosmetic and functional concerns around the eye. Upper eyelid blepharoplasty is an outpatient procedure usually performed with local anesthesia or with light sedation.
